Inter clan warfare has engulfed in various villages of Moyale town and the battle between two communities residing in Moyale namely; Gabra and Borana has spiraled to the central business area of the town by this morning. The battle started last night and armed men from the Borana and Gabra communities engaged in a fierce armed fight leading to dozens of people injured, thousands of people fleeing their various villages for refuge elsewhere outside town. The battle got momentum this morning when the fighting youths from both sides took the battle to Moyale town centre, targeting businesses and homes of people from the enemy clans. By mid-day the police joined the battle to disperse the groups and an officer from the commanding station of Moyale was shot and injured by the armed fighting gangs. The police had hectic time shooting in the air and shooting at the armed boys injuring many of them while others were arrested. By mid-day armed boys in Heilu village staged an attack and they killed a police officer believed to be from the Borana community stationed at Heilu police station of Moyale. Tension is still high in the town and police are now moving round the village to count the bodies of the dead residents who were caught in last night’s battle. Hospital in Moyale is overwhelmed with patients who have sustained bullet wounds while others have crossed Kenya into Ethiopia. |
